When to Consider Cast Iron Pipe Repair

Cast iron sewer and drain pipes can develop scale, corrosion and damaged sections as they age. Eco Pipe Lining helps evaluate the condition of the system and whether cleaning, structural pipe lining or replacement is appropriate for your property.

Pipe condition matters more than age alone. Preparation can expose the extent of deterioration. If the pipe remains suitable for lining, a reinforced CIPP liner may restore the agreed sections. Collapsed, missing or badly aligned sections may require replacement.

A Repair Plan for Aging Cast Iron Drains

01

Less extensive demolition

Eligible pipes can be restored with fewer openings than full replacement. Access still depends on your system.

02

A repair matched to the pipe

The liner, preparation and connections are considered together in the proposed scope.

03

A clear written plan

Discuss access, permits, inspection and warranty terms before the work starts.

The repair scope should address access openings, branch connections and the sections that cannot be lined. Ask how those areas will be restored and what documentation will be provided after completion.

Cast Iron Pipe Lining or Replacement?

Rust and scale can narrow an aging cast iron drain, but age alone does not determine whether it can be lined. Inspection and suitable preparation help show the remaining pipe condition and the defects that need repair.

When lining may be considered

Structural CIPP lining may restore eligible deteriorated sewer and drain sections where condition, alignment, diameter, connections and access allow installation of the specified liner.

When another repair is needed

Collapsed or missing sections, major offsets and unsuitable access can require replacement or a combined repair plan. Cleaning removes suitable buildup; it does not rebuild a failed pipe wall.

Cast Iron Pipe Repair: Common Questions

Do all old cast iron pipes need replacement?

No. The condition and layout of the pipe determine the options. Inspection is needed before recommending the scope.

Can lining prevent opening every floor?

It can reduce extensive demolition where the pipe is eligible, but access openings and replacement of unsuitable sections may be needed.

How does a liner differ from coating?

A structural CIPP liner includes reinforcing felt or fiberglass. A surface coating is a different method and should be evaluated separately.

Will descaling fix damaged cast iron pipes?

Descaling removes suitable deposits so the pipe interior can be assessed and prepared. It cannot replace missing pipe material or repair every crack. The findings after preparation help determine whether structural lining, targeted replacement or another repair is appropriate.
